The official 2024 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge book was launched in Belgium yesterday to hundreds of enthusiasts and media by author Patrick Debusseré with the support of HERO-ERA Chairman, Tomas de Vargas Machuca, who is so impressed with the book that it has been granted ‘official’ status. Tomas said; “This truly is a wonderful book which reflects Patrick’s unrivalled enthusiasm and love of the P2P adventure contained in his and other competitor’s first hand descriptions and awesome pictures from the best photographers in historic rallying. The result is an inspiring portrayal of the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge in graphic detail, which is why we are delighted to grant the book official status.”
The limited edition 414-page coffee table book reveals the grit and determination required in pushing human endurance and vintage and classic cars to the edge of their capabilities, especially when most of the vehicles should be either in museums or tucked up in garages for safe keeping! The ingenuity, and mechanical skills required to keep these amazing vehicles going is part of this story.
Patrick Debusseré writes with authority as he won the ‘Spirit of Peking to Paris Award’ on the 2019 edition driving his 1933 Dodge 6 Roadster to finish fourth overall, in the 2024 edition he was seventh overall winning a gold medal for the second time. 37 days and 14,700 kms of competition took Patrick and his fellow intrepid competitors across the world’s largest landmass over the harsh terrain of deserts, mountain passes and remote tracks, often facing danger and enduring dramas, most of which emerge in the book.

There was a life-threatening incident, fortunately with a happy ending, there was also a lucky escape as the 1914 LaFrance of Tomas de Vargas Machuca and Ben Cussons burst into flames and was burned to a crisp. In another twist of determination to make it to Paris, Tomas returned to the fray to finish in another car.
The book is filled with 700 stunning photographs by creative photographic companies, Will Broadhead Photography and Blue Passion Photo, supplemented by some of the competitor’s own dramatic shots.
The book is superbly edited and produced to the highest quality and would be a worthy addition to any motoring or motor sport enthusiast’s high end book collection.
