1962 Jaguar E-Type OTS (LHD)

1962 Jaguar E-Type OTS (LHD)

Drop Head Gorgeous

If you don’t want to be under the roof of the HERO-ERA Arrive & Drive Fixed Head Coupe but still want to drive a legend, but in the open air, this is it! The absolutely drop head gorgeous red 1962 Jaguar E-Type Roadster.

For many E-Type fans the original flat floored Jaguar with its Moss gearbox is the purest of the E-Type Jaguars as it also was powered by the original 3.8 straight six engine as opposed to the 4.2 litre version in the FHC.

This is a Series 1 car in signal red paint with black leather interior, the 1962 3.8 litre series one version of the iconic car that will give you the most authentic open-top motoring experience. Combined with its early-production raw performance, you can literally hear that big straight six cat roar! It is an open-air thrill as the Drop Head Coupe lets you be fully enveloped by the unabated noise of the triple-carburettor XK engine.

The 3.8 litre engine feels slightly more punchy and eager to rev high compared to the later, more relaxed 4.2-litre torque monster.

The pure styling and heritage of William Lyons are here to be sampled on an appropriate tarmac HERO-ERA event, whether it is a tour or a mildly competitive long distance rally.

As it is the original design, it retains the covered headlamps and uncompromised purity of the original 1961 styling before safety regulations altered the bodywork. It is low slung as you sink into the bucket seat but then once in, you become entranced and connected by the classic E-Type wood rim steering and the two big distinctive instrument dials in the form of the speedometer and rev counter, clear and uncomplicated in Jaguar style as it part of its heritage.

The early 3.8 Series 1 cabins featured the trade marque aluminium-trimmed dashboards and centre console panel unique to the first production years, recognisable even to the automotive heathen as belonging to a Jaguar E-Type.

If you want a real driving dynamic, the HERO-ERA Arrive Drive E-Type offers an unfiltered, old-school sports car feel—including the mechanical engagement of the non-synchromesh first-gear Moss gearbox, which once you master, is a joy to work with.

This early Series 1 3.8 car with flat-floor and the original bonnet-lock sit at the pinnacle of the E-Type experience, which is not to be missed. Check out the  availability and value for hire of this must drive automotive star.

Ergonomics

  • Dashboard: Classic, driver-focused layout with large Smiths-style analog speedometer and tachometer directly behind the wood-rimmed steering wheel, supplemented by a row of smaller auxiliary gauges, toggle switches and warning lights across the centre panel.

    • Ease of Entry: Low sports-car seating position with a relatively wide sill and compact door opening, requiring a noticeable step down into the cabin.

    • Comfort Factor: Black leather bucket seats provide a low, snug seating position with reasonable period support, though cushioning and adjustment are limited compared with a modern grand tourer.

    • On-board Space:

      • Cockpit: Compact two-seat cabin dominated by the prominent transmission tunnel and long centre console, leaving relatively narrow individual footwells.

      • Boot: Wide, shallow luggage compartment with a flat carpeted floor, offering useful space for soft bags despite the low body profile.

      • Behind Seats: Very limited additional storage behind the seatbacks, with the cabin focused primarily on the two occupants.

      • Engine Bay: Longitudinal straight-six installation with relatively open access around the upper engine, typical of the car’s straightforward period mechanical layout.
